Typographical conventions

A typographical note: In the description of spock's command language below a simplified version of Backus-Naur form (BNF) notation is used.

The conventions are:

• Angle brackets and a vertical bar ``<,>, and |'' are used to indicate that only one of the given choices is valid, but neither the bar nor the brackets is properly part of the expression. For example, ``rn=<A|B|C>'' means that any of rn=A, rn=B or rn=C may be used.

• Similarly, square brackets [ and ] indicate that the enclosed text is optional. For example cac=a[tom] indicates that you can type cac=a or cac=atom.

• Finally, the phrase [, selection] stands for any valid atom selection string as discussed in §5.3. The square brackets serve to indicate that the selection is optional.
